Urimaikkaha Ezhu Tamila 2025

Press Release 23.06.2025

The "Urimaikkaha Ezhu Tamila" protest took place with a rally in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, on 23.06.2025. This protest was held to condemn the systematic genocide against Tamils being carried out by the Sri Lankan government, to demand justice, and to call for the liberation of the occupied Tamileelam. It was organised as a united and emotional expression by the Tamil diaspora across Europe.

From a park located in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, the protest began with the sounds of drums and traditional instruments, filled with enthusiasm. Together with members of the younger generation, emotional supporters and the public gathered in large numbers, carrying Tamileelam national flags. They marched as a rally, following a decorated vehicle that symbolised and exposed the Tamil genocide. This rally, marked by the determination of the Tamil people, drew significant attention as it passed through the central area of the European Union.

Following that, the stage events commenced. First, a general welcome was given and the common flame of remembrance (Pothu Chudar) was lit. Then, the national flag of Belgium was hoisted. After that, the Tamileelam national flag was hoisted. Our martyrs were honoured with lighting flames (Eekai Chudar) and placing wreaths of flowers. This was followed by a one-minute silence (Aka Vannakam) in memory of every civilian and martyr who lost their lives, and a pledge of allegiance. As the oath was taken, members of the Tamil Youth Organization participated passionately on the platform, while other Tamil attendees joined in with enthusiasm, proudly holding the national flag of Tamileelam and a picture of our national leader.

A short overview of the "Urimaikkaha Ezhu Tamila" protest was presented in Tamil by Mr. Kilingdan, and the keynote speech was delivered by Mr. Rangan, one of the coordinators of Anaithulaga Thodarpakam. Following that, a French-language speech by Ms. Archithayini, a Dutch-language speech by Ms. Agirthya, and an English-language speech by Ms. Mathusha were delivered. A special speech was also delivered by a representative of the Kurdistan community.

As part of the final events, a declaration was read aloud, and a powerful dance performance by the Academy of Arts from Germany took place. To conclude, both the Tamileelam national flag and the Belgian national flag were lowered. Then, the song "Nambunga Tamileelam" was played, and the youth expressed deep emotional energy. The advocacy for Tamils' rights reached its peak with the powerful demand of the Tamils for Tamileelam. They affirmed their commitment to persist in their struggle, guided by the national leader and inspired by the path set by our martyrs. With heartfelt words from the announcers, a strong vow was made that the thirst of the Tamil people is for Tamileelam as their homeland.

With that powerful proclamation, the "தமிழரின் தாகம் தமிழீழத்தாயகம்" protest came to an end.

This massive demonstration, organised by the International Council of Eelam Tamils (Anaithulaga Eelaththamilar Makkalavai) in coordination with Anaithulaga Thodarpakkam and supported by the Tamil Coordinating Committee and the International Tamil Youth Organization, aims to send a strong message to the genocidal Sri Lankan government, the international community, and other entities. We are confident that the youth will continue to advance the liberation movement of Tamileelam.
